Learn How to Write an Effective Cover Letter

08 / 30 / 19 | Uncategorized

Most job applications ask for a cover letter in addition to your resume. However, your letter could be the difference between getting the job or not. A great letter introduces you to the hiring manager without regurgitating all the information on your resume. Following the cover letter tips listed below, you’re sure to land an interview!

Purpose of Your Letter

Your resume is where you show the hiring manager your skills and qualifications. Your cover letter is where you can expand on these skills. The goal of your letter should be to explain why you’re the best person for the job, why your experiences are relevant, and how you’ll use your skills and qualifications in the role you’re applying for. Your letter should also fill in any missing information you weren’t able to include in your resume.

What to Include in a Cover Letter

To create a successful cover letter, you should format your letter in the following way:

  • Salutation. Greet the person interviewing you by name. If you don’t know the name of the person doing the interviewing, just use “Dear Hiring Manager,” as your greeting.
  • First paragraph: Start with a strong opening. Your first sentence should be something that catches the reader’s attention and makes them want to keep reading. Don’t forget to include your name and the position you’re for which you are applying.
  • Second paragraph: Explain how your skills and qualifications would make you a good fit for the company. Be sure to provide specific examples. Consider looking at the job posting to see the specific skills they’re looking for and include those in your letter.
  • Third paragraph: Specify why you want to work there. Avoid talking about what the company can do for you. Instead, focus on what you’ll bring to the company and how you’ll help solve problems.
  • Closing: This paragraph should include a call to action. Encourage the hiring manager to get in touch with you and set up an interview. Don’t forget to include your contact information.

Keep it Short

Effective cover letters are less than a page long. If you hand in a long cover letter that regurgitates all the information on your resume, it likely won’t get read. Stay focused on your strengths and the skills you’ll bring to the job.
